Fri, 05/29/2020 - 20:26

Dear All,

We generate around 4-5 Tons of chicken dumps mixed with rice husks and we want to use the same to prepare manure for our crops and vegetables.

Kindly suggest how can we make a proper fertilizer out of it. We have an open field where we are storing it presently.

Summer ploughing as part of sustainable farming in Tamilnadu Mission on sustainable Agriculture

Thu, 05/28/2020 - 20:49

Tamilnadu mission on sustainable Agriculture Development ( TNMSDD )
Part of TNMSDD is summer ploughing ,for which Tamilnadu Agriculture department pay Rs.1250 per hectare as ploughing subsidy .Why summer ploughing ?
1.Deep summer ploughing breaks open impervious subsoil layer and increase aeration and infiltration of rain water and prevent run off vis-a-vis soil erosion
2.Due to aeration ,the microbes in soil multiplies and decompose organic waste of previous crop in soil
3.It brings pupa of soil borne insect pest out on to surface and gets killed by hot sun as well as birds that eats on it .
4.Turning over of soil during summer ploughing also expose soil borne pathogenic microbes to hot sun and sterilise it .
5.The rain that brings down dissolved atmospheric nitrogen is effectively intercepted by the ploughed surface and soil fertility status henceforth increases .
6.The ploughed soil forms a sheet of layer on top soil that effectively prevent evaporation loss of water
7.The residue of pesticide or weedicide if any sprayed on the previous crop will be disintegrated and broken down by hot summer heat .
Hence summer ploughing is an essential part of sustainable farming in rainfed area . One way or other it reduces the risk of rainfed crops due to aforesaid advantages

Using of PGR for fruit plants

Wed, 05/27/2020 - 18:46

I am an amateur roof top gardener having more than 30 types of fruit plants. Mango, all citrus categories fruit , bar, guava, water apple, apple, dragon fruit, custard apple, naspati, grapes, cashew, peach, apricot, cherry, persimon, pomegranate, jamun, blackberry, strawberry and many other.
I used miraculan as PGR, but recently bought Bayer’s PLANOFIX. I saw different recommendations for different crop. I want a general dosage(ml/l) of Planofix for all types of fruit plants which will be beneficial as PGR as well as increasing fruit set- fruit yield.
Waiting for experienced farmers, experts reply.

Scarecrow prevents birds damage

Wed, 05/27/2020 - 11:26

When ground nut seeds are sown in the field birds like crow and peacock come in flock and eat the seeds .And most of the time birds damage the grains and fruits ready for harvest in the field .In this case farmers need to scare the birds off until either the seeds germinate or the mature grain or fruits are harvested .So scarecrow in disguise are set up in the field to signal the birds as if men are standing and moving around …
This set up is fixed to the ground by a flexible spring system and when the winds blow the scarecrow moves about and scare the birds

Desert locust swarm - Holocaust in India

Tue, 05/26/2020 - 23:58

The desert locust which originated in Africa fed gregariously on green vegetation post monsoon in Ethiopia and adjacent countries , multiplied and migrated from there and swarmed through Oman into Iran where it devastated crops , then passed into Pakistan where it increased the size of its army and settled in border districts of India. .Nearly half of the 33 districts in Rajasthan have been attacked by LOCUST SWARM and 50000 ha of crops were lost in Mathya Pradesh .Feared it may next move into UP, Punjab , Haryana ,Chandigarh and cause great loss of crops there .The locust swarm about 1 square mile size is capable of destroying so much as the quantity of food consumed by 35000 people a day .controling this locust swarm is a challenge for us .Some tips to prevent this desert locust swarm is given below .
10 kgs of hot green chillies +5 kg of garlic +5 kgs of small onion ground into past and put in 10 lit of native cow urine .In about 2 days mix 2 lit of this chilli based extract in 15 lit water and spray over the crop . Spray Neem based products @ 3-5 ml in one lit of water as deterrent . Strike loud metal sound ,raise alarm through radio or electronic devices in the field to scare the locust . Finally you can resort to synthetic chemical spray

An Indeterminate hybrid tomato yields more than 100 MT per acre

Tue, 05/26/2020 - 02:13

An indeterminate F1 Hybrid Hiltom yields more than 100 MT of fruits in one acre ( 4000 Sq M) when cultivated with 60 % organic and 40 % water soluble fertilizers . When the soil is fortified with enriched organic manure before transplanting and subsequently WSF alternated with liquid organic nutrients ,the crop grows steadily to reach the height of even 15-20 feet into the sky . First harvest is done in about 90 days .Every 3 rd node bears cluster of 5-6 fruits each weighing 230 grams on average . The least of the weight of fruit at fag end of growth is around 150 grams .Planted with 10000 seedlings per acre, each plant is grown on single stem thus maintaining quality and uniformity of weight of fruits . Since heavy bearing hybrid needs steady and sustained feeding of nutrients ,the organic and bio inputs play a vital role in obtaining maximum harvest without compromising the size and quality . The fruit has the extended keeping quality for over 3 weeks . In warm climate , 50% shadenet cloth will do better and in polyhouse or green house continuous production of yield is maintained with balanced plant nutrients and staking .
Also this Hiltom performs excellently well under hydroponics cultivation . Only few rare hybrids perform well in open field cultivation , polyhouse and greenhouse . One of the rare few is this Hiltom . So even an ordinary farmer who does not know about advanced production technologies can harvest minimum 60-70 MT as this tomato tolerates fluctuations in daily weather and has inbuilt resistence to fungal diseases like wilt and rot and tolerance to insect pest . This means only when the pest level crosses well beyond the Economic threshold level that significant reduction in yield is noticed .and under the prevailing circumstances of infestation ,with a round of less toxic insecticide spray the pest can be controlled without reduction in yield …

Lucerne -A multipurpose crop in Farming

Sun, 05/24/2020 - 18:11

Lucerne is the queen of forage crops .Is it just that ? No , it is a multipurpose crop . In the past one or two decades ,new concepts in farming or traditional farming practices in disguise of sustainable farming , integrated farming , organic farming , natural farming or whatever the name it has been called have been evolved and put in practices by many enthusiasts ,let alone be the outcome of so called different farming methods .
Coming straight to the point , this Lucerne brings immense benefit to the farmers as forage ( green fodder ) hay ( dry fodder ) silage (Cattle pickle )
It contains 18-24 % protein with nearly 75-80 % digestibility .
It can fix atmospheric nitrogen in its root nodules and increase soil fertility . For every MT of dry matter it generate 10-20 kgs of nitrogen in soil .So the subsequent crop raised on the same field after the harvest of Lucerne grows well and produce more and quality yield of produce .

Again the roots grow deep in the soil that in turn allows more infiltration of rain water .In rainfed area ,this is one of the advantages for the farmers to effectively conserve rain water .

Also it is used as green manure to enhance soil fertility level as Lucerne is a rich source of mineral nutrients called Calcium , Magnesium , phosphorus etc.

It is also grown as cover crop that manage to check the weeds and condition the soil for subsequent cultivation of commercial crops

It is a natural bio soil ameliorant as it lessen the impact of soil salinity that adversely affect crop growth , root development and ultimately the yield of produce …

It can also be raised as intercrop in coconut for fodder , enhancing soil fertility and checking weeds …
Lucerne can be sown in interrow spaces of orchard .so it prevent soil erosion and run off and conserve soil moisture and add plant nutrients to main crop . The harvested fruits are of premium quality .
In integrated farming system ,Lucerne plays a vital role .
Cultivation of Lucerne
20 kgs of seeds are sown in one hectare .
First harvest comes in about 75-80 days after sowing .
Subsequent harvest is made in every 25-30 days
Totally 80-90 MT of green fodder is harvested in one hectare in 9-10 harvest
Plant grows to the height of 60-70 CMS
Seeds produced in one hectare field is 200-250 kgs
The farmers practicing organic farming / sustainable farming / integrated farming / natural farming can consider this option of growing Lucerne .

Natural organic weedicide

Sat, 05/23/2020 - 15:16

In farming ,weeds are the main deterrent causing great yield loss upto 45 % besides reduction in quality and taste of the produce .
Controlling weeds during early stage of crop growth is a real challenge for most of the farmers and under the circumstances when rain continues the weeds grow very fast ,most of time overtaking and surpassing growth the of main crops cultivated .
More specifically the organic farmers / natural farming practicioner face the challenges of checking weeds as they are not allowed to use synthetic weedicides …
Let us see how does weed affect crops …
The weeds grow simultaneously when irrigation is given to main crops sown in the field .
It competes and shares the soil moisture/ water available for crops
The weeds always grow faster and in more numbers and remove the nutrients meant for main crop that is left deprived of enough nutrients …
Likewise it shares and competes for sunlight …
It also acts as host for many insect pest and diseases that may infect and damage crops ,causing loss in yield and quality of the produce …
Weeds secretes some photochemical that causes allelopathic effect on main crop ,thus stunting and sickening the main crops cultivated…
So the weeds are serious menace and farmers need to bestow their best attention if at all they want to harvest quality crops for consumer markets …
How to prepare natural organic WEEDICIDE
materisl required

  1. 10 lit cow urine ( rich in nitrogen )
2.2 kgs of calotropis leaves ( rich in boron - essential plant micro nutrients )
3.2 Kgs of sodium salt ( abounds in chlorine ,a plant micro nutrient )
5.1/2 kg of limestone ( calcium oxide stone piece , certainly not powder )
  2. 1 or 2 pieces of lemon fruits

Grind calotropis leaves well and mix it in cow urine , then add calcium oxide , sodium salt and leave it for a week .Get one or two lemon fruits squeezed into the main preparation .
Now your natural organic WEEDICIDE is ready .You can add one lit of this to 9 lit water and spray well over the weeds
